April Showers

Hey there bloggies, I realize it's been forever since my last post, but it's mainly because of how hectic this month has turned out to be. I've had lots of work and tests and just haven't had time to work. And now it's getting down to crunch time as I have a paper due on Thursday. Yikes. So I'm basically on to mention as many cool costume-y and crafty things as I can remember to avoid posting multiple posts.

I applied to intern in a wardrobe department at a local theater so I'm waiting to hear from them. I also have gotten a lot better at my embroidery projects. I ordered a set of towels and 3 patterns from my (now) favorite stitching company and a about half-finished with an international travel themed towel. I also have a sushi apron which I plan to finish, I just need to figure out how to stitch a french knot to create texture on some of the sushi rolls.

At one point during the last couple weeks when it felt everything was crashing down around me and my peers, I decided to take some time and make a friend happy. I had found instructions for making a Hogwarts acceptance letter online and decided to go forth with it. I downloaded some cool (Harry Potter) fonts, did some editing, printed the letter in (emerald) green ink, and then soaked it in tea in a cookie tray. After the three papers dried, I folded them and stuffed them in an envelope inscribed with her address (room and dorm) and delivered them with an owl I had my neighbor draw. It looked adorable.
 Delivery!

I also had a wonderful (albeit cold and wet) time visiting NYC for my costume tour. We visited a famous beauty magazine and got to talk to an alum and then walk (more like bolt) through the office past racks of clothing for shoots and spreads on the walls of upcoming pages. It reminded me a lot of The Devil Wears Prada (both the book and the movie). Then we walked to the Fashion District and saw the current exhibits at FIT (Vivienne Westwood, "His and Hers," and and exhibit about Kyoto (which was very different and contained less Lolita fashion than I expected). Last, we visited a major costume house that constructs constumes for some of the current broadway shows. We saw costumes from Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark, How to Succeed in Business (Without Really Trying), Lion King, Mary Poppins, Phantom of the Opera, the Radio City Christmas Spectacular and so many others. It was fantastic. Below are some photos I took. Really really cool stuff.
Shows the company has worked on

(above and below) Christine's faded "Masquerade" skirt with hand beadwork. It had soo many layers of fabric and it was very heavy!

 Lots of shoes and underwear

 Materials for a new skirt

 A Spiderman costume

 The shop (soo many dressforms!)

 How to Succeed understudy dresses

Christine's matching (yet faded) bodice. Incredible beadwork.

Another (over the top) Spiderman costume

So that's it for now. Hope to see all you readers after a long and stressful semester.
